FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can come?
Up to 6 guests per private charter. That's a U.S. Coast Guard limit for our captain's license, so it can't be increased. Scuba trips include up to 4 divers, with room for 2 more at $100 each.

Is there a minimum number of guests?
No minimum. You can even pay us to go fishing without you. :)

How do I book?
Choose your trip, pick a date and pay the deposit. The remaining balance is due after your charter.

Do you offer multi-day trips?
Yes. We build multi-day St. Croix trips around your group: diving, fishing, island time and more. Text 210-788-1594 or email hello@somewheresaltyvi.com for details.

What if the weather is bad?
Your captain makes the call. If we cancel, you can reschedule or receive a full refund of your deposit. See our refund and cancellation policy.

Are snacks and drinks included?
Yes, every charter includes water and snacks. You're welcome to bring your own food and BYOB drinks (no glass).

What should I bring?
Reef-safe sunscreen (no spray), a hat, sunglasses and a towel. We provide ice and gear.

What safety gear is on board?
All U.S. Coast Guard–required safety equipment, including youth life jackets. And for comfort on the ride, we have bean bag seats.

Can we drink alcohol on board?
Yes, BYOB, no glass. No drinking before or between dives or swims.

Can kids come?
Yes. We carry youth life jackets, and a parent or guardian must sign the waiver and come along.

How far out do we go?
St. Croix is basically the top of an underwater mountain, so the water gets very deep very fast. On a typical fishing day we stay within about 10 miles of the island and pass over depths of more than 13,000 feet. Longer runs are possible when conditions allow. Just ask.

What fish might we catch?
Offshore: blackfin, yellowfin and skipjack tuna, wahoo, kingfish, mahi-mahi, and blue and white marlin.
Reef: snapper, grouper, jacks, barracuda, cero mackerel and hogfish.
Deep drop: grouper, queen snapper, silk snapper, amberjack, tilefish, swordfish and some strange creatures from the deep.
Please note: reef fish can carry ciguatera, a natural toxin, in varying amounts. We don't recommend eating them unless you understand the risk. Ask your captain.

Do we keep the fish?
Yes. We'll clean and bag your catch for you.

Is gratuity included?
No. 15–20% is customary.

I get seasick. What should I do?
Take seasickness medicine the night before and again the morning of your trip, eat a light breakfast and let your captain know.

Where do we meet?
We'll confirm your departure point when you book. It depends on the trip and the sea conditions.
